A place dedicated to the art of Nativity Scenes with more than 5,000 square meters? It exists. It is located in the town of Mollina, in the province of Malaga, in the heart of Andalusia. The International Museum of Nativity Scene Art is a unique cultural center whose aim is to promote and preserve the art of nativity scenes. It has seven exhibition areas, where visitors can see more than 100 nativity scenes, with more than 2,000 exclusive figures.
Three monumental nativity scenes stand out from all of them. The first one is circular and takes the visitor on a journey through the Bible, from Adam and Eve to the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. The second one, in “The Cave”, shows various passages of the New Testament, from the departure of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, to memories of Jesus's childhood. On the third monumental nativity scene, with more than 25 meters, typical places and traditions of the 8 Andalusian provinces are represented.
During the visit to the International Museum of Nativity Scenes, the visitor has the opportunity to see several types of nativity scenes and dioramas, examples of different styles. Neapolitan nativity scenes and their tradition imported by Charles III to Spain in the eighteenth century; compositions of a marked impressionism, as Josep Traité prints on his nativity scenes; the figures of Angela Tripi, with a more classical style and those that seem to come to life, or the sweetness of the Montserrat Ribes’s works, and also nativity scenes where popular culture is very present.
In addition, the museum has a temporary room dedicated to scenes of the Passion of Christ and next to the courtyard there are facilities where the visitor can see oil mills, agricultural implements and how the rooms of a popular Andalusian house were.
The International Museum of Nativity Scene Art of Mollina was inaugurated on December 17, 2017. It is the dream come true of the Diaz Caballero Foundation, which for several years worked to launch this cultural center, where the collection of nativity scenes compiled over decades could be exhibited, and it could be turned into a space for the diffusion and conservation of the art of nativity scenes.
